I have been reading"The London Dungeon Book of Crime And Punishment by Richard Byrne"which is fab.It`s about the development through history of crime and punishment in London and had some appropriately dark pictures;

This man Jonathan Wild is here because i am still thinking about what Michelle Obama said to some schoolgirls on the news awhile back-how if they worked hard they could achieve anything.The English reporter then pointed out that the statistics suggest they cannot.

It reminded me of this dark book about the history of London and all the shocking similarities between the haves and have not`s of back then and the priviledged,wealthy and poor of today.How we seem to the Americans and yet only on rare occasions to ourselves so accepting of these inequalities.

Jonathan Wild would probably have agreed with Michelle Obama.He started out as an apprentice to a buckle maker and ended up running a vast criminal Empire.He was the King of the Underworld in 1720`s London and if you ignore his frilly hairdo looks a bit like one of the Kray twins!

Flower Brooch
This is my first brooch!Made of paper mache inside, but it is very water tight.The paper mache is a"composite",which is what they used to make dolls out of.It dries very solid and can be sanded like wood,although you get a fuzzy felt like finish.Which is why i then covered it in a thick layer of homemade Gesso.It also has several layers of glossy varnish back and front.The reverse is red.

This is an odd one to title let alone describe.It has lots of pink but also lots of rainbow colours.Each individual bead is a real mashup of riotous random colour,the overall effect is a bit like beautiful grafitti,when you cannot tell what the picture is of, but it`s so chaotically colourful it`s beautiful.

Lovely Lilac Lady doll,available to buy on Dawanda,,which is in Euros,she is £8.99
This perfect looking doll puts me in mind of Heidi for some reason,she is more of a goldilocks really."Fairytale Doll"available for sale if you click on the link.

The pink trim on her dress and hat and also her shoes is all a slightly lighter shade of sweet pink that really came out in the photo.

Marbled Hearts Beads Necklace

Each of these heart beads are individually hand shaped and varnished.Set on a strong black waxed thread.Occasionally some of these beads have a bit of polymer clay gold dust on them.This happened in an attempt to liven up the brown hearts,which are always far too horribly brown.

Olafur Eliasson`s The Weather Project which was at Tate Modern in London in 2004.Wish i lived near London and had seen this.Apparently there was a reflective ceiling and spray machines that created a mist and the appearance of a dissolving/setting sun.

They should cancel some of the repeats on tv over the christmas break get Olafur to put this on!

The line across the middle is where it has been folded for years and you can see the newspaper print coming through from the other side a bit.
I just love this pic`.I know it`s an AD for a phone company but i think it`s so much better than that.I like the drawing style and the Smooth vampire taking his bat for a walk ,it`s got charm!
I have had this since the year 2000 though,and just bought a new phone on 3 network so as advertising it may not have worked...

Goddess Headgear Part 1

Contents of scrapbook loosely titled"Goddess Headgear."The only rule to get into the scrapbook is that whatever is adorning the wearer`s[female] head [or in the region of] has to say "power."And so ideally be fitting headwear for a Goddess.

Some of the pic`s might seem a bit wide of the mark,unintentionally hilarious,the fancy dress Amazon,above, for example,not a good place to start.But i saw something inspiring when i glued it in and i stand by that,whatever it was.

I have been thinking of making headwear again for my online shop,but attatching things to headbands till they look gloriously insane is easy and getting them to stay on your head[so you can sell them]is not.

However i am filled with baseless optimism at the brilliant prospect of perhaps creating something maybe someday that,you never know,doesn`t fall off my head when i look down.

Paper Mache/Composite Recipe

I have not made any of this in ages so hopefully if i blog it i will not loose it.This Paper Mache is called "Composite" because is not just paper and glue,when it has dried it is very solid,a bit like wood,can be sanded and is fairly tough.

You Need;

Ingrediants-
-4 Double Broadsheet pages
or
-8 Double tabloid pages

-Two heaped tablespoon of Whiting
-Two tablespoons of white PVA glue
-One tablespoon of Linseed Oil
-Two drops of clove Oil*
-Two tablespoon of wall paper paste

*In the original recipe,it said "Wintergreen Oil"which i could only find for sale online from the US,clove oil was another option,i think it`s use is to slow it`s going mouldy if you store it in the fridge for awhile.

Utensils-
-Latex gloves
-Baking Bowl
-Large pans,2 if possible
-Whisk
-plastic bags with ties,if you are going to store it.
-Old Sieve.Large and not used for anything else.
-Watertight Bowls/Buckets/plastic storage boxes,for soaking shredded paper in.

1.Take the newspaper and shred or rip it up.Leave it soaking in water overnight.Leave it soaking in something you do not really need spotlessly clean for anything else because the ink comes off and sticks to the sides.
Does not really matter if you leave it soaking longer as long as it does not dry out.

2.The original recipe said boil the soaked paper for 20 mins,i don`t think that was long enough.I boil it till i see it has dissolved sufficiently to only need minimal whisking.Use pans you DO NOT NEED AT ALL.The print ink will really stick to/ruin them.I use two large old pans.Make sure they are as full of water as possible when boiling and top up when necessary.If you let it boil dry you end up with a paper cast of the inside of your pan!

3.Whisk the pulp to as fine a grain as possible and pour into a seive.The whisk is better a whisk you do not use for anything else too,as with everything ,the ink really clings to it.Placing the sieve in the bottom of the sink as the water may still be hot.

4.Leave the pulp to cool in the sieve.

5.Wearing plastic gloves ,give the pulp a prod to see if it cool enough to handle.If it is squeeze the bulk of the water out but do squeeze until all the moisture has come out,do not squeeze dry.The pulp needs to retain moisture to be mixable with other ingrediants and pliable/workable when modelling.

6.Transfer the moist pulp into a large baking bowl and add all the ingrediants except the wallpaper paste.Mixing thouroughly with your hands[keep the gloves on!]is best.Add the wall paper paste last.

7.At the mixing stage if you do not want to use your paper mache straight away it is best to have little plastic bags ready, 4 is a good bet and 4 ties/clips.Seal the bags.They will store in the fridge for three weeks.Definatley No longer,when it goes off it really goes off [stinks!]for some reason.The usual odour is not unpleasant but there is an odour so they are best stored seperately from food.

The witches are paper mache but the dripping effect is Gesso,made with Whiting and rabbit glue.The paper mache can be sanded but you get a fuzzy felt finish.Gesso can be sanded to a much finer finish.

Bitten Bead Rainbow Bracelet

If you get all the little chocolate/polymer clay centres exactly the same size,about 60 or 70 of them then add similar width white layers they should all come out roughly the same size.

Always leave half a dozen of the chocolate centres spare as a size guide in case you need to make more of them.

You want them to remain as flat as possible so flatten them at each stage in the desired finished saucery shape;as chocolate centres,with white coating and coloured leaving them for at least an hour between each stage for the clay to dry out a little bit after the stickiness of handling.

Dont try and thin the edges out too much in a flying saucer style,it just creates wobble.

The damned light damned rotten blue ones will forever take on fingerprints like an s.o.b no matter what precautions.Just for no apparent reason, the blue doesnt like the white?[or the red either].Get an earbud soak it excessively in water and smooth out the finger print ridges.Remember it is the water that does this and not the earbud.Do not get the earbud into contact with the clay if it is only a bit wet, you will be pushing the clay around and the whole thing will go wonky.

A Reminder;

1. You can get these beads SMALLER than smarties.

2. Start off with a tiny undersized Petit Pois of choc` colour fimo.
*Bearing in mind already when choosing the size of the bead what you are going to skewer it on to bake it.The skewering ALWAYS distorts the shape.Headpins best for smaller beads.

3.Thin out a small circle of white clay and cover the choc pea smoothly,sealing all holes.Roll back into circle,squash slightly to flat shape just to stop it rolling away.

4.White Layer.There has to be this white layer or the brown layer will show through to the colour layer.Rubbish.

5.Colour Layer.Flatten out thin circle of clay,roughish approx of size required.Cover white layer smoothly so no white is showing through.Roll back into circle.Fashion edges thinner smartie style,without losing circular shape.

6.Cover with clingfilm to avoid dust.Leave overnight to cool/dry.If you skewer them now the already a bit mushy ones will become horribly mushy.Rubbish.

7.Do not put In fridge.Short cut that does not work.This will cause little white platelet/blood cell like things to form under the surface of the clay.Utterly crap.

8.Chip bitten bits out with lino cutting tool.keep neat.

9.Skewer,reverse bead and hang/suspend whilst baking to avoid shiny flat bits forming.Remove any shiny areas last formed whilst they were left overnight.
-When skewering pat end of skewer as it comes through the clay,this will stop bits of clay coming away and keep the hole neat.

I`m going to pearl them,gloss them,punk them and try a range of different colours.

New Bracelets available to buy on Dawanda.So sad i will not be able to make these super shiny hearts beads anymore or anything this shiny as they have stopped producing the fimo gloss varnish.Hope someone starts selling something similar that is not water soluble,the soluble varnishes are rubbish and no where near as glossy.Although i love making the semi transparent pearly heart beads too,the subtle colouring is much harder to photograph.

My handmade translucent polymer clay heart bead bracelet.The individually crafted little heart beads are not see through having been coloured and varnished then painted with pearlescent powder and varnished again but they do have a delicate frosted glass like effect.Very very pretty.

Its really unusual to see a sculpture of a female that is huge, imposing, impressive and powerful.This one of an Egyptian Goddess is also a little bit spooky-bonus points!Its the Huge eyes and it was all red originally?Red is used under gold nowadays when gilding but maybe they didnt back then ,i dont know maybe it was gold.I swear it also looks a little mishcheivous.

Huge Giantess all red/gold/black?goddess,staring down at the population with her massively scary black mishcheivous eyes.I dont know if Archaeologists have a methodology for finding out who the cool people were in antiquity but i hope if they ever have that she is one of them.

Blog is still alive but refusing both image and writing in same post so below is a picture of the necklace i currently have for sale up on ebay.User name Lyselicia.There is also a ridiculously well priced rather fetching rainbow bracelet made up of small 1cm polymer clay hearts,handmade.

I`ve been meaning to post someplace it might get noticed more something about FRONTLNE the spot on treatment for cats,but if i don`t do it here i will never get around to it.

The vet [or vets as it is a different one everytime we go] should have told us not to put the treatment on our sick cat as it says on the packet.Even when after having the treatment the cat became almost catatonically depressed the vet insisted in was unlikely to have been caused by the treatment.It was.Within two hours of having the treatment she was distressed and listless eventually just sinking into a deadeyed lifelessness for the approx three weeks it took to wear off.It does say on the Frontline packet 'May cause depression'.Our vet seemed to know nothing about it.
Really frustrated with the attitude-when she was so depressed it seemed like her time was up and she aught possibly to be put down the vet insisted all was well .Now she has multiple things wrong with her but is in a reasonably chipper mood the vet thinks her game is up!
This farce is no way to end 18 yrs of adorable furry loveliness.

My previous blog had uploaded images of my handmade jewellery but since i am starting again just linking to the jewellery seems futile so the link includes the books and dvds i have put up.

So i am using baby oil as a thinning medium with oil paint.The smell is wonderful compared to turps, the price is good compared to liquin and it comes off your hands much easier.I cannot find any information anyplace about baby oils` suitability and have been warned the long term consequences for the paint will not be known till it is too late.Shit to that i say.There is only one way to find out and as long as it dries [which it does] before it all flakes off i can always vacuum it up.
